Chapter 13

Break Bread

It’s been nine weeks since the robbery, and I was now a certified millionaire. I came off with five point seven million and thirty-six kilos of cocaine for myself. I kept my money in a storage facility, and the only person who knew where it was, was my mother. I made sure that I didn’t make the same mistake Jarius did.

The time had come for me to move the kilos, and I knew who I was going to give them to. So I called Reese, Dre, and Trick and had them meet me at the park in Chavis Heights. I was shootin’ ball when Reese and Dre pulled up.

“What’s up?” Dre asked as he grabbed the rebound from my missed shot.

“Ain’t shit. What’s up with y’all?”

“You. What’s so important that you got us out here first thing this morning?”

“I’ll tell you when Trick gets here.”

We shot some hoops for about ten minutes before Trick pulled up in his new Cadillac.

“I know y’all are wondering why I got y’all up here, so I’m gon’ get straight to it. Yo, I’m done.”

“What? I know damn well you ain’t get me up out of my bed for this shit,” said Trick.

“Yo, would you hold fast and listen to what the fuck I got to say? Now, like I was saying, I’m done. I’ma try to go to college.”

Seeing that I was sincere, Dre asked, “How you going to do that?”

“Easy. I’m going to go to Wake Tech and get my diploma. Then I’m going to take the SAT, and if I score high enough, I’ll walk onto the football team.”

“Here we go again,” Reese said jokingly.

“Nah, for real, yo. I’m dead serious. If I make the team, I’m damn near positive that I’ll get a walk on a scholarship.”

“Nigga, you ain’t played ball in damn near three years.”

“That’s why I’ma run and hit the weights hard for a year. Nigga, I can still run the rock,” I said to Reese, letting him know that I still had game. “But like I was saying, y’all are my niggas, and I got to make sure y’all are straight. So, I want y’all to meet me at my mom’s house tomorrow night so we can celebrate.”

“Celebrate what?” Trick asked, still not understanding why I was getting out of the game.

“My retirement, and me going back to school. Plus, I got something for y’all, but y’all got to come to the house to get it.”

Everyone agreed to meet at my mother’s house the following night at about seven. I glanced at my new Cartier watch and saw that it was 8:30 a.m. “Yo, fellows, I got to roll.”

“Where you headed to?” Dre asked.

“I got to meet Porsha.”

“Tell her I said what’s up.”

“Yeah, a’ight,” I said as I took my last shot.

“She still mess with that white boy?” Reese asked.

“Yeah, they’re married now, and his name ain’t ‘white boy.’ It’s Karl,” I replied, defending Karl. I knew that Reese was on some racial shit.

“I don’t give a fuck what his name is.
